As we usher in the fall season at WMC, we have already reached the mid-point of the first academic quarter of the 2024-25 school year and our athletics and activities programs are now in full swing.

In September, we celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month at WMC. We hosted our annual Activities Fair during the lunch period on two successive days, giving all students the opportunity to explore the over 65 clubs and activities that we offer at WMC. Later in the month, we proudly opened our building to the community for our annual Back-to-School Night event. The evening began with the well-attended "Hidden in Plain Sight" program presented by Prevention is Key and sponsored by the Washington Township Municipal Alliance. The first of three College Fairs later this month saw representatives from over 75 post-secondary colleges and universities visit our building to promote their school to our students. To wrap up September, WMC hosted the 3rd annual Tournament of Bands marching band competition at WMC. The WMC marching band competed with 10 other visiting bands that evening to compete for the best in show.

Looking forward to October, the month will open with our annual Spirit Week, culminating in our Spirit Rally and Homecoming Dance. We will celebrate the Week of Respect with theme days recognizing National Stop Bullying Day as well as World Mental Health Day. Mid-month, college representatives will return for our second mini Collge Fair of the year while we close the month by hosting our first-ever Robotics competition as students and advisors prepare for state competition later this school year.

WMC Students of the Month

Each month at WMC, teachers are asked to nominate students who best embody one of the characteristics within our "P.R.I.D.E." acronym. From those nominees, one student per grade level is selected as our P.R.I.D.E. Student of the Month. Honorees are recognized during morning announcements, they have their photo displayed in the main entrance of our building, they are recognized at monthly BOE meetings, and are celebrated with an end-of-year luncheon in June.

This month, the following students were honored for the PASSION that they display on our campus each day:

  • Grade 9: Alexis Buchanan

  • Grade 10: Elias Koby

  • Grade 11: Natalia Dreeland

  • Grade 12: Donovan Schwartz

Congratulations to our Students of the Month!

Student Athlete of the Month

Each month at WMC, we recognize two student-athletes for their outstanding accomplishments as members of their respective athletic programs. Head coaches have nominated their student-athletes for this recognition each month. Honorees are highlighted on a bulletin board in the fieldhouse, they will have their photo displayed in the glass case in the main entrance of WMC, and they will be celebrated at an upcoming Board of Education meeting.

WMC Athletes of the Month for this month are:

  • Field Hockey, Alexis Buchanan

  • Boys Soccer, Jade Diaz

Congratulations to these student-athletes for being leaders on and off the field at WMC.

National Merit Semifinalists

Congratulations to WMC seniors Damian Gizas and Jeffrey Jiang for being semifinalists in the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring PSAT entrants in each state. A semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn SAT® or ACT® scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test.

Caring Crisis Hotline

For World Suicide Prevention Day, West Morris Central hosted the Caring Crisis Hotline/ 988 to increase awareness of this resource for our students. The representative shared the importance of reaching out via 988 either through text or phone call.  Caring Crisis Hotline fosters a safe place to start a conversation if you are feeling overwhelmed and alone.  The students enjoyed the prize wheel while many students received the information and resources offered to them.

Back-to-School Night

On September 12, we hosted our annual Back-to-School Night program at WMC. The program began with a pre-event session, "Hidden in Plain Sight," sponsored by the Washington Township Municipal Alliance Committee and presented by the Morris County Prevention is Key organization. Class rotations began following the pre-session event allowing parents to follow their children's daily class schedule, meet their teachers, and learn more about each course of study.

Mini College Fair #1

On Tuesday, September 17, WMC hosted our first Mini College Fair of the year for interested students. Over 75 colleges and universities were in attendance while representatives from each were available to students to answer questions. Thank you to WMC school counselor, Mr. Cusack, for organizing the event. The next WMC Mini College Fair is scheduled for October 24.

Art Courtyard Rain Garden

This fall, WMC is partnering with the Rutgers University Cooperative Extension Water Resources Program to develop a rain garden in the art courtyard outside Room C140.  The rain garden has begun to take shape with the preliminary digging taking place last month. Once complete, the area will become another outdoor space on campus for staff and students to enjoy each day at WMC.

Unified

Unified Sports Recognition

Congratulations to WMC Unified Sports for being named as a National Unified Championship School by the Special Olympics for the second year in a row. A Special Olympics Unified Champion School has an inclusive school climate and exudes a sense of collaboration, engagement, and respect for all members of the student body and staff. Research has proven that when all three components are incorporated, there is a deeper impact on the individual participants as well as the overall culture and climate of the school.

WMC Tournament of Bands

On Saturday, September 28th, the WMC Marching Band hosted the third annual Tournament of Bands competition “Music in the Valley”. The competition featured 11 bands from across the state and, despite the weather, it was spirited evening of competition, camaraderie, and music-making. Participating bands were judged on individual and group abilities.
